2022 Children’s Shortlist
Gabrielle Balkan is best known for non-fiction books that delight readers ages 0-12 with curious and essential facts about the United States, animal record-breakers, and ground-breaking artists. In a starred review, Kirkus said Whose Bones? An Animal Guessing Game was “An excellent and even playful introduction to the skeletal system of both human- and animalkind.”
Recommended by the National Council for the Social Studies-Children’s Book Council and International Literacy Association, Gabrielle’s other books include The 50 States, 50 Cities, Book of Flight, Book of Dinosaurs, and Georgia O’Keefe: She Saw the World in a Flower. She researches and writes about things she wants to know more about.
Gabrielle grew up across from the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis with oodles of cats, a handful of dogs, and teacher parents. She now lives in the Hudson Valley of New York where she enjoys reading detective novels, cooking soup, and hiding geocaches for other outdoor enthusiasts to find. When she’s not puzzling over how to explain complex topics to readers, Gabrielle takes great joy in visiting classrooms to talk shop with elementary students.
